Why Rainbow Crosswalks?

Rainbow crosswalks aren't just pretty paint. They acknowledge the specific historical contributions of a community that helped make modern Guerneville possible.

In the 1960s, Guerneville was dying. Floods had devastated local businesses, jet travel had made our rustic charm seem obsolete, and the economic future looked bleak. Then something remarkable happened: LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs from San Francisco saw potential where others saw problems. They bought up abandoned resorts, invested their own money, and built the thriving destination we know today.

This isn't about excluding anyone. Guerneville's identity has been shaped by its embrace of diversity and its willingness to be a place where people can be authentically themselves. The rainbow crosswalks would be a visible reminder of that heritage and a statement that we remain committed to being that kind of community.

Who are we and what is Armstrong Woods Commerce Corridor?

We are not a formal organization nor do we have any political affiliations. We are simply a collective of local businesses that are in support of this proposal.

As we find ourselves in a meaningful conversation about inclusion, history, and community identity, we know this isn't a simple yes-or-no issue for everyone. Some see it as honoring the community that revitalized our town after the floods of the 1960s. Others worry about using public infrastructure for symbols, or feel our existing rainbow flags already show sufficient support.

What we do know is that understanding builds bridges. It doesn't guarantee we'll all reach the same conclusion. But it does guarantee we'll respect each other as we work through difficult decisions together.
